Reviving an Antique Mahogany Dining Room Table

Antique Mahogany Dining Room Table restoration

In the quiet corners of our workshop at Abbey Group, a significant restoration project is currently underway. This isn’t just any repair job, it’s a labor of love and skill, revitalising several high-value antique pieces that were recently damaged under dramatic circumstances.

The Unfortunate Incident

A burst pipe led to a disastrous ceiling collapse directly above an exquisite dining room setting, causing substantial damage not only to the dining room table but also to the sideboard, mirror, chiffonier, cabinets, and dining chairs. Among these, the antique mahogany dining room table suffered severely. The incident snapped the table’s leaves in half and compromised its intricate running system.

Restoration Challenges and Techniqueswater damaged room

The restoration of this table has been both challenging and rewarding. Our first step involved painstakingly repairing the running system, essential for the table’s functionality. The leaves, tragically snapped in half, required precise biscuit jointing—a method used to align and join edges seamlessly.

Stripping and sanding followed, preparing the table for the critical stage of finishing. Our polishers are now tasked with applying their skills to preserve and enhance the table’s age and patina, a crucial process that requires an understanding of the wood’s history and the effects of time.

Maintaining the Essence of Antiquity

Preserving the authentic character of antique furniture while ensuring it can withstand the demands of modern use is a delicate balance. The goal is to maintain the original aesthetic allure without erasing the signs of age that contribute to its story and value. French polishing, the technique we’re employing, involves applying multiple thin coats of shellac using a rubbing pad. This technique not only enhances the wood’s appearance but also provides a durable finish that respects the table’s historical integrity.

A Piece of History in the Making

As we bring this table back to life, we reflect on the memories it has been a part of and the future gatherings it will host. This table, with its rich mahogany hues and the soft sheen of French polish, is not just a piece of furniture—it’s a centrepiece that brings people together, bearing witness to conversations, celebrations, and everyday moments.
