Restoring a Piece of Tailoring History

Merchant Tailors sign

For years, this striking Federation of Merchant Tailors sign had been tucked away in a customer’s cellar, gathering dust and losing its original splendour. Now, thanks to a meticulous restoration, it has been brought back to life and given a place of pride outside Souster & Hicks Bespoke Tailors.

The Restoration Process

Bringing this historic sign back to its former glory was no small task. It required:

  • A thorough clean-up to remove years of dust and grime.
  • Colour-matching the paint to ensure authenticity and maintain its traditional appearance.
  • Sealing with an exterior protective coating to guard against weathering and ensure its durability for years to come.

This restoration wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about preserving a legacy.

Sadly, the Federation of Merchant Tailors no longer exists, but its influence in the world of bespoke tailoring was undeniable. Geoff Souster himself was the 99th President of the Federation in 1987/88.

As the governing body of bespoke tailoring, membership wasn’t handed out lightly. To join, tailors had to prove their craftsmanship—demonstrating the ability to hand-cut and fit garments on their premises. This distinction separated true bespoke tailors from those offering made-to-measure services. It was a mark of authenticity, allowing customers to distinguish between those who were truly “pukka” tailors and those who were not.

A Lasting Legacy

Now restored and displayed outside Souster & Hicks, this sign stands as a testament to the craftsmanship, dedication, and heritage of bespoke tailoring. While the Federation may no longer exist, its values of skill, quality, and authenticity live on in true bespoke tailors like Souster & Hicks.

If you appreciate tailoring that stays true to tradition, Souster & Hicks is the place to experience the finest craftsmanship—100% “pukka” bespoke tailoring.
