There are a few things you can do to take care of your upholstered furniture and keep it looking its best. Flip cushions over and squish them up every so often to make sure they wear evenly. Don’t sit on the edges of cushions or furniture arms, as this can make them wear out more quickly. Also, you should change your covers often to keep the seams straight and get rid of creases.
At the Abbey Group, we’re proud of how much we care about our customers. We can help you whether you need a little fix or a thorough reupholstery. Our team of upholstery experts loves what they do and is committed to giving you the best service possible.
We provide upholstery work for restaurants, pubs, dental and medical offices, and other companies, as well as for people’s homes in Essex. We work hard to make sure that the craftsmanship and materials we use are of the finest quality. This way, your furniture will look great for years to come.

Upholstery FAQs
Is it cheaper to reupholster furniture than to buy new furniture?
This depends on what you have. If it can be bought for a low price, it will probably cost more to have it reupholstered. If it’s made of hardwood and still has a lot of life left in it, it’s probably better to re-upholster it than throw it away.
Do you guarantee the work you do?
All of the work we do and all of the fabrics we sell come with a 12-month guarantee. This doesn’t cover damage caused by accidents or normal wear and tear. “Customer’s own material” is not something we can promise.
What are the fabric care instructions?
Everything we upholster with fabrics we buy from companies we trust will come with written care instructions and information about the fabric.
A certificate will also be given for fabrics that have been treated to make them less likely to catch fire.
How do I generally take care of my upholstered furniture?
It’s important to take care of upholstery and keep it in good shape to keep it comfortable and looking nice.
Cushions should be plumped up regularly and, if possible, flipped and rotated to make sure they wear evenly and aren’t too fast to light.
At first, seat cushions may feel quite firm, but they will get softer as you use them.
We recommend that you don’t sit on the edges of cushions or on the arms of furniture, as this will cause them to wear out unevenly.
Redress your covers often to get the seams to line up again and to try to get rid of any wrinkles or puddles.
Moving seams, wrinkled fabric, and “puddles” (which are caused by natural fabric stretching) are all maintenance problems, not flaws in the fabric.
Darker fabrics hold their colours better than lighter ones.
The colour will fade and wear out faster on natural fibres than on man-made fibres.
There is a layer of fibres on the surface of natural fibres, and they may lint. This is normal, and it will stop on its own in time. Until the top coat wears off, giving them a gentle vacuum will make them look better.
Can you replace or refill my chair/sofa cushions?
Any cushion, even ones that are fixed, can be re-filled or have its inners replaced. We can show you the different inner options, and you can try them out to see which one gives you the level of comfort you need.
All of our cushions are made to order based on their size, shape, and materials.
Do you re-upholster antique furniture?
We can certainly reupholster antiques, and we can also give quotes for woodwork that needs to be brought back to its former glory in a sympathetic way.
Do you upholster real leather furniture?
Yes. We have a selection of top leather companies we use and can do colour matching as well as helping you to find the right leather for your piece. If you would prefer to look into having your leather furniture re-coloured and restored, we can also get quotations for this for you.
Do you only do domestic upholstery?
We also do upholstery work for restaurants, pubs, dental and medical offices, and other businesses.
What is your re-upholstery process?
If you can send us photos of your furniture or project by email, we will try to give you a rough estimate at first.
If you’re okay with this, we’ll help you find the right fabric and trims, and you can make an appointment to look through our pattern book showroom.
If samples are ordered, we will bring them to your house when they arrive and give you a final quote and measurement.
Then, to book you in, we ask for a 50% deposit.
We hope that our FAQs have helped you.
